Can Olive Extract Prevent Bone Loss?

Many postmenopausal women and even some men are affected by osteoporosis - a disease that causes loss of bone density and increases the risk of bone fractures. Osteoporosis is more common in certain high risk people including those with a family history, people with small bones, smokers, people who have a sedentary lifestyle, and those who dont get enough calcium and vitamin D. Is there a way to prevent bone loss naturally? According to a new study, olive extract could be a natural way to preserve bone health.

Olive Extract for Healthy Bones: Can I Prevent Osteoporosis?

According to a study published in the journal Osteoporosis International, a compound in olives called oleuropein may be important for bone health. Researchers studied the effects of this natural compound found in olives on stem cells from the bone marrow of humans.

Stem cells from the bone marrow produce osteoblasts, cells that make bone. These cells are opposed by osteoclasts, which break down bone - so that theres a constant turnover of bone tissue going on.

When researchers added oleuropein to human stem cells, it caused bone-producing osteoblasts to expand in number. Other studies show that oleuropein has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, which helps to inhibit osteoclasts, the cells that break bone down. The combination of these two factors bodes well for healthy bones and the prevention of osteoporosis.

Olive Extract for Bone Health: Does It Look Promising?

Research is still in the early stages but scientists found similar bone boosting benefits in animal studies. Larger scale studies are still needed in humans, but theres epidemiological evidence to support olive extract. In countries that eat a Mediterranean diet rich in olives and olive oil, there is a low rate of osteoporosis. Theres no proof that its due to the olives, but when combined with this new evidence, it looks promising.

Food manufacturers are hoping to add olive extract to foods to create "functional foods" that would reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Its too early to recommend olive extract for healthy bones, so continue to get enough calcium and vitamin D - and wait for further research.

Storing Vitamins Wrong Reduces Their Effectiveness

More people than ever are taking vitamin and nutritional supplements of some type - and most store them in the kitchen or bathroom to make them more accessible when they need a glass of water to swallow them. On the other hand, according to a new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, storing vitamins in the kitchen or bathroom may not be such a good idea. Exposing vitamins to these humid areas of the house can decrease their effectiveness.

Why Does Storing Vitamins in the Kitchen and Bathroom Reduce Their Effectiveness?

University of Purdue researchers found that when vitamin pills are exposed to the high humidity in bathrooms and kitchens, it causes the outer layer of the vitamin to gradually dissolve - a phenomenon known as deliquescence.

This process is accelerated at warmer temperatures which makes the kitchen a particularly bad place to store vitamins since kitchens heat up when stoves and ovens are turned on. So effective is this breakdown process that storing vitamins in areas of high humidity can completely destroy their effectiveness.

Doesnt It Help to Keep the Top On?

Even if you store vitamins in humid areas with the top on the bottle, it still wont their prevent breakdown. Each time you take off the top, the vitamins are exposed to more humidity - and when you close it, the humidity is trapped in the bottle along with the vitamins.

How Can You Tell Whether Your Vitamins are Losing Their Potency?

Check the inside of the bottle and see if any moisture has accumulated along the sides. Another sign are brown spots on the outside of the pills. If you see either of these tell tale signs, discard the vitamins since theyve most likely lost some of potency.

How to Store Vitamins

Its best to store vitamins in a dark, dry area at room temperature with the lids tightly screwed on. Fortunately, even if you take vitamins that have degraded, they wont hurt you. You just wont get the benefits. When storing vitamins, always keep them out of reach of children just as you would with prescription medications - and discard them once they reach their expiration date.

The Bottom Line?

Store vitamins properly to make sure youre getting the full benefits.

How to Make Unique Flower Vases You Can Customize for Any Occasion

Vases filled with beautiful flowers are a great way to compliment the d?cor of any home. Instead of buying a different vase to compliment each flower you want to display, why not make your own interchangeable vases that can be customized to meet the needs of any d?cor? Heres how to make unique, customized flower vases for every occasion:

Make unique flower vases: Purchase clear glass containers

To make your flower vases, youll need several clear glass containers in two different sizes. The first group of containers can be the size of your choice. The second group of containers should be slightly shorter and at least an inch and a half narrower in width so they can easily fit inside the larger glass containers. The smaller glass containers can be any type of inexpensive glass container from a drinking glass to an old vase as long as it fits inside the larger glass container with an inch and a half to spare around the edges.

Make unique flower vases: Prepare your flowers and the first glass container

Select your flowers and trim them so the stems are even in length. Bundle them together with a rubber band or other secure cord. Fill one of your smaller glass vases partially with water and place your bound group of flowers inside the smaller glass vase. Add more water if necessary.

Make unique flower vases: Prepare your larger glass container

Place the smaller glass container with the water and flowers into the middle of the larger glass vase.

Make unique flower vases: Time for decoration

The object is to fill the space between the smaller glass container and the larger glass container with small decorative items that compliment the flowers and your d?cor. Its time to use your imagination! Fill the gap with colored sand, pieces of colorful sea glass, brightly colored beads, tiny glass gemstones, or any other objects small enough to fill the gap.

For Valentines Day, fill the container with candy hearts to create a unique "I love you" vase to compliment pretty flowers such as tulips. For Halloween, fill a vase with candy corn. If your home is decorated in neutral shades, fill the container with tiny seashells to compliment white roses. The beauty of this type of vase is you can quickly customize and change the look to fit any occasion. Youll enjoy the flexibility of this type of customized vase that you decorate yourself. Why not give this fun technique a try?

What is Vanadium?

There are certain trace elements the body needs only in tiny quantities for health. One of these is an element called vanadium. What is vanadium, and why do you need it in your diet?

What is Vanadium?

Vanadium is a micro-mineral and trace element. Its an element thats shrouded in mystery, because no one really knows exactly how the body uses it - and how much is needed for good health. Its also not clear whether humans really need vanadium for survival, although animals deprived of vanadium have reduced growth rates and lower hemoglobin levels.

It may have some benefits for particular populations though. Some research shows that vanadium helps type 2 diabetics better control their blood sugars by acting like insulin in the human body. Because of this, some type 2 diabetics take vanadium supplements in hopes of lowering their blood sugar levels. Although vanadium seems to have insulin-like activity in the body, large randomized clinical trials havent been carried out to show that its safe and effective for people with type 2 diabetes.

Sources of Vanadium

The best food sources of vanadium are shellfish, vegetables, wine, beer, fruit juice, mushrooms, parsley, dill and whole grains, but the body doesnt absorb vanadium from foods very efficiently.

Is Vanadium Safe to Take as a Supplement?

Some people use vanadium as a sports supplement to enhance performance, but theres little evidence that it works. Vanadium has potential for lowering blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics, but to get these effects youd have to take concentrations up to 50 times greater than the upper limit set by the National Academy of Sciences.

Taking large doses of vanadium to control blood sugars isnt necessarily safe since it causes kidney damage in animals at high doses. In humans, high doses cause intestinal upset, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

What is Vanadium: The Bottom Line?

Vanadium isnt a mineral most people have to worry about being deficient in since so little is needed. Type 2 diabetics may benefit from more dietary vanadium or supplements, but there are few good studies to support its blood-sugar lowering effects. Plus, there are questions about its safety at high doses. Its best to get vanadium from food until more is known.

A Simple Way to Get Motivated to Exercise

Are you struggling to get motivated to work out? If a lack of workout motivation is coming between you and a buff body, theres a simple solution. Get a workout partner. According to a survey, 83% of people believe having an exercise buddy would motivate them to work out more.

Get Motivated to Work Out with a Fitness Partner

Whats so motivational about having an exercise partner? An exercise buddy makes you more accountable. When you set a date to workout with a partner, youll more likely to stick to it because someone else is depending on you to show up.

An exercise buddy can also be a source of motivation and inspiration, especially if they have an upbeat attitude towards working out. When searching for the perfect exercise partner, dont choose someone who "whines" about each exercise or gives up too easily. This obviously wont help you in your quest to get lean.

Working out with a partner also makes the time go by more quickly. Having someone to talk to during a workout keeps you from looking at the clock every five minutes to see if its time to stop exercising. Still, too much talking can be a distraction, so its important to strike a good balance.

Choosing the Right Exercise Buddy

Look for someone who has fitness goals that are compatible with yours and whos at roughly the same level of fitness you are. Its not going to work if youve just starting to walk, and your partner is a seasoned runner. Talk to a prospective exercise partner and make sure your goals, abilities and personalities are compatible.

How to Find an Exercise Partner

A local health club or YMCA is a good place to start looking for an exercise buddy - or join a walking or running club to hook up with another fitness buff. There are even online sites designed to help you find an exercise partner - but be careful. Check the person out first - and meet them in a public place. Your local church or job can also be a source of potential exercise partners.

If you like the solitude of walking or running outdoors and need a silent partner to keep you motivated, take your dog along. What could be more motivating than a wagging tail? Dogs dont see exercise as work - only fun - and thats motivating in and of itself. Whether you choose a human or canine fitness buddy, dont underestimate the importance of working out.

Are There High Pesticide Levels in Your Fruit Juice?

Fruits have been shown to have a variety of wonderful health benefits. With their high vitamin and antioxidant content and a relatively low calorie profile, its no wonder more people are adding fruit to their shopping list. While the natural fruit with its fiber intact is generally the healthiest choice, some people turn to fruit juice as a quick and convenient way to get the health benefits of fruit. Unfortunately, a new research study published in the journal Analytical Chemistry may cause fruit juice lovers to think twice. It turns out those seemingly healthy fruit juices may have high pesticide contents.

In a study, carried out in Spain, over one hundred different fruit juice and fruit juice drinks were tested for the presence of pesticides. These fruit juices and fruit drinks came from fifteen different countries throughout the world including the United States. To their surprise, many of the samples contained relatively high pesticide levels of the types that are normally sprayed fruits during the growing process to protect them from insects. Although the levels of pesticides found in fruit juice from the United States was lower than those from Spain and the U.K, the fact that such substantial concentrations were found in some samples is cause for concern. The levels of pesticides in many of the fruit juices tested were much higher than those allowed in bottled waters. Its unclear from this study whether any of the samples tested and found to have high pesticide levels were labeled as organic fruit juice or whether they were all made from conventionally grown fruits.

If you drink fruit juice should you be concerned about these high pesticide levels? Although the long term effects of most pesticides are unknown, it certainly wouldnt seem wise to consume them on a regular basis, particularly in the case of children who may be more susceptible to their effects. If you want fruit juice without the high pesticide levels, buying organic juice may be the way to go. Organic fruit juices are generally sold at natural food markets and some conventional grocery stores. Although theres no guarantee that these juices are pesticide free, they, most likely, will contain much lower levels of pesticides than standard fruit juices. Another option would be buy organic fruit from a trusted source and use a juice extractor to make your own fruit juice. Even better, get your fruit quota by eating the whole fruit so you can take advantage of the fiber.

Back to Basics Green Tea Daily Moisturizing Conditioner: A Quick Review!

Green tea has always been a favorite drink of mine. I love the taste and can appreciate the considerable health benefits. You can imagine my delight when I found Back to Basics Green Tea Daily Moisturizing Conditioner. I loved the idea of using green tea on my hair.

This rather large bottle of conditioner caught my attention when I was visiting our local salon store. The cute little green tea logo on the label caught my eye and I couldnt resist taking a bottle home. The sales clerk assured me I would be pleased my purchase.

Upon arriving home and opening the bottle, the first thing I noticed was the deliciouslybsweet, fruity aroma of the condition. Eager to try it, I shampooed with my regular shampoo and followed up with the Green Tea Daily Moisturizing Conditioner. The light, nongreasy conditioner felt good on my fingertips and the naturally fruity fragrance reminded me of a summer breeze. It made my normal conditioning session feel like a mini spa treatment! But would it improve the look and feel of my hair?

I have color treated hair which presents a dual problem. My hair is dry due to the coloring and needs conditioning to have any sheen at all. Its also fine which means most conditioners weigh it down, giving my hair a lackluster, flat appearance. It really makes finding the right conditioner a challenge! When I rinsed the conditioner from my hair, I noted that it rinsed off cleanly, and left my wet hair with a soft, smooth, nongreasy feel. So far, so good. But, would the effects hold up after blow drying?

After blow drying my freshly washed hair on the high setting, I immediately noticed how light and airy my hair felt with absolutely no trace of the greasiness I had experienced with previous conditioners. My hair actually had lift and body! I was pleased to say the least.

One small complaint, the wonderful green tea scent that was so apparent when I was using the conditioner was difficult to detect now. Maybe my nose had just become desensitized to the sweet scent. Ill have to see how it plays out with future washings. It would be a bonus to hav that scent linger throughout the day!

All in all, I would highly recommend this conditioner to anyone who needs conditioning that wont weight your hair down or cause it to be flat. The price is reasonable and I believe it would be difficult to find a better value for the dollar.

Next time you need a conditioner, give this fragrant formulation a try!

Eating During Labor: Is it Safe?

Women in labor are usually told not to eat or drink anything until after the baby is delivered, but this advice may be outdated in some cases. In the UK, women in hospitals awaiting delivery now have the freedom to eat and drink at will; and a new study shows that drinking liquids and eating food during labor may not be so risky after all.

Why Has Eating and Drinking During Labor Been Discouraged in the Past?

The biggest concern is that women who drink or eat food during labor would be at risk of a condition called Mendelsons syndrome. This syndrome occurs when a person is given anesthesia after eating - usually during a caesarian section. While under anesthesia, a woman may regurgitate food thats been eaten which could enter the lungs and cause a chemical induced pneumonia. This syndrome which is fairly rare occurs most often during obstetrical procedures like a Caesarian section. Women also sometimes vomit during labor - especially if theyve eaten - which is another reason hospitals restrict eating and drinking during labor.

Drinking and Eating During Labor: A New Look at the Issue

A review of five studies involving over 3,000 women found no evidence that drinking or eating during labor caused any health problems. This was true whether the women ate food or drank liquid, and no particular food or drink appeared to be more problematic than any other. The researchers concluded that women should decide whether or not to drink or eat during labor since there are no apparent health risks.

Eating and Drinking During Labor: One Caveat

Women who are at high risk for pregnancy complications and those who may need Caesarian delivery or other obstetrical procedure during labor should avoid eating or drinking because of the risk of Mendelsons syndrome. Some women may be better off without food if theyre nauseous or have a history of vomiting during labor.

Should You Drink or Eat During Labor?

Some hospitals and doctors have a strict policy against eating during labor which should be adhered to. If your doctor gives you the okay to have food and drink, eat lightly. Labor is uncomfortable enough without trying to deliver a baby on a full stomach. The good news? You can celebrate with a real meal once its over.

When You Should Avoid Low Fat Foods

Do you look for the label that says "low fat" when you shop for snack items at the grocery store? Like many Americans, you believe that low fat foods can help you loose those last stubborn pounds. Unfortunately, this may not be the case according to new research. Theres some thought that it may be best to avoid low fat foods if you want to promote weight loss. Why might this be?

There is the perception that low fat foods are significantly lower in calories than their full fat counterparts. In reality, low fat foods average only around 10-15 percent lower in calories which is not a significant caloric savings. In addition, its been shown that people who eat low fat foods and snacks actually end up eating more than if they had eaten the full fat version, thus compensating for the small difference in calories.

A study carried out at Cornell University showed that people ate more M & Ms from a container marked low fat than they did from one that was marked as regular M & Ms. It seems most people feel entitled to eat more when they believe theyre eating low fat which usually more than compensates for the small calorie savings. The decision to avoid low fat foods may be a wise one if youre not capable of controlling portion sizes.

Another reason to avoid low fat foods is the sugar content. To compensate for the lack of taste and texture of low fat foods, manufacturers frequently add larger amounts of sugar which can have an adverse effect on insulin levels and potentially promoting fat storage of fat. Certainly if youre practicing a low carb or good carb diet, youll want to avoid low fat foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates.

Does this mean you should avoid low fat foods entirely? Not necessarily. It simply means when you do consume low fat foods, you use the same attention to portion sizes as you do when you eat full fat foods. You should also avoid low fat foods that have added sugar and high carb contents by carefully reading the label on all products you buy. Some substitutions that might be easily made include using low fat cream cheese, low fat sour cream, low fat mayonnaise, and low fat milk in place of their full fat counterparts. These products usually dont have excessively high carb counts which might offset your attempts to lose weight.

It may not be necessary to avoid low fat foods entirely, but make your selections carefully in order to keep you diet and weight loss plan on track.

How to Choose Hair Products for Fine, Oily Hair

Having hair thats both oily and fine can be a double whammy, particularly if you use the wrong hair care products. Fine hair tends to lack body and with the added oils produced by the scalp, it can quickly weigh hair down, causing it to look limp and lackluster. The secret to dealing with this problem lies in choosing products for fine, oily hair that remove excess oils without weighing the hair down.

Choosing a Shampoo for Oily, Fine Hair

When selecting a shampoo for oily, fine hair, choose one designed specifically for your hair type. A clear shampoo is usually the best option since they have fewer ingredients that will weigh hair down.

To make a very effective shampoo for fine, oily hair at home, use castile soap as a shampoo base. Castile soap is an all-natural soap product that lacks the chemicals found in most commercial shampoos. Simply mix one cup of liquid castile soap with one cup of water. Add a teaspoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of lemon juice to remove excess oil and give additional cleansing benefits. Castile soap based shampoo wont form a rich lather because it lacks the detergents found in commercial shampoo, but it does an effective job of removing excess oils that can weigh the hair down. Its also less likely to strip hair color.

After Shampoo Treatments for Fine, Oily Hair

After shampooing, rinse hair with a homemade vinegar rinse made by adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water. Place the mixture into a spray bottle and spray onto your hair after shampooing. Comb it thoroughly through your hair using a wide toothed comb and then rinse with cool water. If you have long hair and the ends feel dry, apply conditioner to the ends only. This vinegar rinse can be used twice a week to give additional oil zapping power. An alternative is to use lemon juice. This is a particularly good choice for blondes since it can subtly brighten the color.

Other Tips for Fine, Oily Hair

If you use hair styling products, you may still need to use a clarifying shampoo to remove build-up once a week, but its best to limit the use of hair products that can weigh hair down. Many mousses and gels that are advertised for fine, oily hair actually cause more problems than they correct. With fine, oily hair, the less you put on it, the better.

As you can see, theres no need to buy expensive products to treat fine, oily hair, simple homemade products often work just as well.

The Smallest Dog in the World: Is This the Dog Breed for You?

When it comes to dog preferences, there are those who love the strength and size of large dog breeds such as the Great Dane and St. Bernard, while others prefer the comfort of a smaller, lap dog type such as a Toy Poodle or Bichon Frise. For those who love small dog breeds, theres none smaller than the tiny, but fearless, Chihuahua. Despite their diminuitive size, this popular breed has a great deal of courage and a sense of self importance that belies their size, all without a hint of an inferiority complex. Their small stature has earned them the distinction of being the smallest dog breed and its not always easy being the smallest dog in the world.

How tiny can the smallest dog actually be? The previous record for the smallest dog in the world was held by a Chihuahua living in Slovakia who measured only five-and-a-half inches in height. This dog passed away several years ago. The record for the smallest dog was set to be taken over by Dancer, a five inch high Chihuahua living in Lake County, Florida until two other Chihuahuas ousted the title from him with the record finally going to Boo Boo, a four inch high member of the Chihuahua breed. Sadly, Dancer passed away suddenly about eight months ago after receiving certification as a therapy dog.

Besides being the smallest dog breed, Chihuahuas are often fiercely devoted to their owners and will fearlessly protect them should they perceive a threat. Although theres only so much damage you can do as the smallest dog in the world, the Chihuahua puts on a fierce front which goes to show how attitude is everything. Many Chihuahua owners joke that the breed would be a terror if they weighed as much as a German shepherd.

The smallest dog in the world loves activity, particularly if done with their owner and is not overly fond of being left alone. Therefore, they can be a time intensive breed and are not the ideal dog for an owner who works all day and rarely has time to spend with a pet. Theyre also generally not fond of children and have been known to growl and nip at them if provoked. Having a Chihuahua with children in the house can take some training on the part of both dog and child.

If youre considering the Chihuahua, the smallest dog in the world, as a pet, dont be fooled by the size. Small doesnt necessarily mean less work. Having a Chihuahua will require a considerable time commitment on your part, but with a dog this affectionate and loyal, itll be worth it.

Yoga vs. Walking to Treat Anxiety

Who doesnt feel a little anxious and "stressed out" from time to time? One of the best ways to "send stress packing" is to exercise, but what type of exercise is best? Two forms of exercise that doctors recommend to anxious patients are yoga or walking. Both forms of exercise require minimal equipment, other than a good pair of shoes, and theyre safe for most people to do. But which is better?

Yoga vs. Walking for Anxiety Treatment

According to a new study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary medicine, yoga trumps walking when it comes to easing anxiety symptoms. Research shows that yoga increases levels of a neurotransmitter called GABA thats low in people who are anxious. Doctors often use medications that increase GABA levels to treat anxiety, but yoga increases levels of this "relaxing" brain chemical naturally. Just one the many benefits of yoga.

According to researchers at Boston University School of Medicine, yoga not only raises GABA levels, participants feel less anxious and "stressed out" after a session. Doing yoga poses increases the release of this powerful neurotransmitter that calms the mind and reduces anxiety.

What About Walking for Anxiety?

Walking at a low to moderate pace reduces levels of cortisol, the so-called stress hormone. This helps to reduce anxiety levels too, although it doesnt affect GABA levels in the same way yoga does. Walking outdoors in nature is particularly therapeutic for lowering cortisol levels and reducing stress and anxiety.

The Benefits of Yoga vs. Walking

Yoga vs. walking for anxiety - which should you choose? Either has its benefits for relieving stress, but yoga outperformed walking in this study. It would be ideal to combine both forms of exercise as a double-pronged approach to treating anxiety. Walk for thirty minutes one day, and do a thirty minute yoga session the next. This would offer a little variety too.

Yoga vs. Walking for Anxiety: The Bottom Line?

Yoga has powerful benefits when it comes to relieving anxiety, because it alters levels of the brain neurotransmitter GABA. On the other hand, walking outdoors has a calming effect too. Try combining these two forms of exercise, and feel your stress melt away - naturally.

How to Get Rid of Roaches and Prevent Them from Coming Back!

Theyre not the prettiest things in the world! In fact, theyre right down scary looking especially when you find one crawling over your dishes or on your food! This will be a two part series on how to get rid of roaches. This part will tell you what you need to do to keep them out of your house so you never have to deal with them again. The second article will tell you what you need to do to eliminate roaches that are already in your house.

The best way to eliminate roaches is to prevent them from getting into your home in the first place. This is best done by keeping your house, particularly your kitchen and bathrooms scrupulously clean so theres no food to attract roaches and no place for them to hide. Use containers with tight seals as roaches have the uncanny ability to slip into even the tightest spaces. Theres nothing more upsetting than opening your favorite box of cereal and finding a big, healthy roach inside! Tupperware containers with tops that seal tightly make good storage containers for boxed items such as cereals.

Your next step is to make sure your door frames and windows are sealed properly. Also check for cracks in the foundation and floorboards of your home. These are all access points where roaches can enter your home. If in doubt, use caulk to seal any openings. Another point of entry is through your kitchen or bathroom drains. This is why its important to keep your drain as clean and free of food and moisture as possible. Never leave a source of open water such as water in a sink or bathtub. Roaches will be attracted by the moisture, not to mention other insects.

What about your trash cans? Make sure theyre emptied on a daily basis and any sticky debri is removed from their surfaces. Kitchen and bathroom counters should be kept free of crumbs and debri, and, of course, moisture.

To sum it up, you can prevent roaches from entering your home by keeping your counters, workspaces, and shelves free of crumbs, debri, and moisture and by limiting clutter so roaches have no place to hide. As an additional measure, you should make sure all entry points for roaches are sealed off such as windows, baseboards, and door frames. Screens should be placed over any pipes or vents that open to the outside.

If you take the above measures, its usually enough to prevent your home from getting infested with roaches. In the next article, well explore how to get rid of roaches that are already in your home.

Whats the Best Cradle Cap Treatment for My Baby?

You have a new baby! Congratulations on your new birth! Many new mothers are disturbed to find their baby has the symptoms of a harmless, but unsightly, condition known as cradle cap. Believing their baby has a serious skin condition, many mothers become frightened and seek treatment for this rather common condition. Fortunately, theres no need for alarm since this condition shouldnt cause long term problems for your baby.

Just what is cradle cap and how does a baby get it?

Cradle cap is a harmless condition of the scalp occurring in infants and newborns It presents with visible scaling and mild redness. Its really more unsightly than anything and is basically a harmless condition that will resolve on its own over a period of a few months whether its treated or not. Its reassuring to know this condition is not passed from baby to baby or from baby to adult and shouldnt cause any pain or discomfort to your baby.

Because of the benign nature of this condition, cradle cap treatment should be minimal and should consist of proper shampooing and gentle removal of the scales present on your babys scalp. Usually baby shampoo is the best choice for your babys shampoo as its pH is such that it wont irritate a babys sensitive scalp. A soft toothbrush along with a small amount of baby oil can be used to remove the scales from a babys scalp, although this should be done gently to prevent further irritation to an already sensitive scalp.

If the symptoms of cradle cap fail to resolve over several weeks, a doctor should be consulted for further workup and evaluation.. Other scalp conditions can cause scaling including ringworm which is best diagnosed and treated by your pediatrician. If the symptoms of cradle cap persist despite your best efforts at home, your doctor may prescribe a medicated shampoo to help dissolve the scales faster and return your babys scalp to normal. He may also recommend use of a cortisone cream if there is extensive scalp irritation.

Can cradle cap be prevented?

The best way to prevent cradle cap is to shampoo your infants scalp every few days with a mild baby shampoo.

Its reassuring to know cradle cap is common and benigh condition that will completely resolve even without treatment. Fortunately, by taking the above steps you can initiate your own cradle cap treatment and speed up the process considerably. Pretty soon your new baby will have a shiny and scale free scalp!

Why You Should Drink Milk After a Workout

Forgot those fancy, overpriced sports drinks. To replace lost fluids after a workout, milk may be the better answer. According to a new study, replacing some of the carbohydrates in sports drinks with milk protein normalizes body fluids faster than guzzling a Gatorade.

Milk after a Workout May Top Sports Drinks

When researchers compared a drink made with 65 grams per liter of carbohydrate to one containing 40 grams of carbohydrates and 25 grams of milk protein per liter, the latter helped to replace fluids lost through exercise more effectively. Researchers believe the proteins in milk slow down gastric emptying, which allows the body to reabsorb more fluid. This leads to faster re-hydration.

Milk after Exercise: How About Some Chocolate Milk?

When it comes to optimizing endurance and recovering quickly after a workout, chocolate milk may be the best sports drinks of all. In one study, cyclists who drank chocolate milk before a long cycle to exhaustion were able to bike fifty-percent longer than those who sipped on traditional carb-rich sports drinks.

During intense exercise, especially sprinting and resistance training, muscles develop small tears that need protein to heal - but the body also needs carbohydrates to replace glycogen stores. Milk has just the right ratio of carbohydrates-to-protein to maximize recovery from exercise.

Other Benefits of Milk after a Workout

Not only does milk and chocolate milk have an ideal ratio of carbs to protein, its also a good source of calcium, which is important for bone health and for effective muscle contractions. In addition, the flavanols in chocolate milk increase levels of nitric oxide in the body. This maximizes blood flow to hard-working muscles. Nitric oxide also helps to dilate arteries and lower the risk of heart disease by preventing blood clots caused by platelet aggregation. You dont get that when you drink a sports drink.

Milk after a Workout: The Bottom Line?

If youre looking for an inexpensive sports drink, a cup of chocolate milk after a workout may be your best bet. The bonus? It tastes great too.

How to Decorate a Clutch Evening Bag for a Party

Do you have a plain clutch evening bag that could use a little added style? Dont be tempted to buy a new one when you can quickly and easily transform your plain clutch bag into a handcrafted work of art. With a little creativity, you can craft a handbag that will draw raves from your friends and compliments about your design talent. Heres how to decorate a clutch evening bag:

Decorate a clutch evening bag: Attach some semiprecious stone cabachons

Have you ever been to a high end boutique and seen the prices on purses that are decorated with stones? They can be astronomical. The good news is you dont have to pay those prices. Simply take your purse down to your local bead store and spend an hour arranging semiprecious cabachons on the front of your purse. Once you find an arrangement you like, buy fabric glue and attach them to create your design. Most bead stores have a good selection of stone cabachons in a variety of shapes and colors which will give you a lot of creative freedom. If you dont want to spend the money for semiprecious cabachons, glass ones will work as well.

Decorate a clutch evening bag: Attach rhinestones

If youll be carrying your clutch bag to a ritzy event, you may want a glitzier purse. To add a touch of glitz, glue rhinestones in a pretty design on the front of your clutch bag. Rhinestones are easy to attach using glue. Be sure to select a glue that dries clear and is specifically made for fabric.

Decorate a clutch evening bag: Attach an antique filigree

One way to instantly transform a purse and give it a vintage appeal is to attach an antique brass filigree to the front. If you cant find a true antique filigree, buy a filigree from your local craft store. While youre there, pick up a bottle of antiquing solution and darken the metal yourself. Once youve given the filigree an antique look, use hot glue to attach it to your purse. You can use several filigrees to create a design if you prefer. Remember, its your own unique work of art.

Decorate a clutch evening bag: Paint on your bag

If you have a bit of artistic talent, get some fabric paints and freehand your own design on the front of the bag. If your art talented is limited, buy stencils at your craft store to make you an instant artist.

Decorating a clutch evening bag is a great way to bring out your inner creativity as well as give you a fun new purse to carry to your next evening function.

Does a Low Fat, Low Calorie Donut Sound Good?

Does the word "donut" and "low fat" sound like an oxymoron to you? Certainly a warm, freshly glazed donut isnt health food in anyones book. But if youre committed to eating right yet salivate at the thought of a donut and a warm cup of coffee, theres still hope. Holey Donuts to the rescue! This unique company offers a stunning variety of mouthwatering donuts that are low in fat without trans fats that make snacking on a donut such an artery clogging experience.

Would you believe the average donut from Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Creme has between fifteen and twenty grams of fat? No wonder Holey Donuts is making its mark on the dessert world with its low fat donut selection - donuts which contain only four grams of fat. Plus, its reassuring to know theyre trans fat free. These tasty orbs are also low in calories, averaging between 150 and 200 calories per donut - less than half the calories of a traditional donut.

How did Holey Donut manage to create such a low fat, low calorie donut? They developed a unique cooking process which allows the creation of a tasty, low fat donut without deep frying - the process which adds most of the artery clogging fat to traditional donuts. By using this process theyre able to prepare, for example, a low-fat vanilla crumb donut with 148 calories and only 3 grams of fat. This is just one example of the many low fat donuts this company offers. Some of the other tempting flavors include low caramel apple, reduced fat vanilla frosted Boston cream, low fat caramel crumb, reduced fat raspberry graham, among others. Their best seller is a tempting coconut cream pie donut. When you tire of their low fat, low calorie donuts, they also make jumbo reduced fat cinnamon buns. Would you believe these buns only have between eighty and ninety calories per bun? If youre racking up calories with frequent trips to Cinnabon, this is a much healthier alternative.

More good news. Holey Donuts delivers and you can purchase individual donuts or assortments from their website. By all means, if you can live without donuts, its best to have fruit instead; but if your sweet tooth cant be satiated with an apple or bowl of strawberries, this is a healthier alternative than a trip to Dunkin Donuts. Keep in mind that even low fat donuts should be eaten in moderation since even the healthiest donuts are low in nutritional value. But if a sweet craving hits, these low fat, low calorie donuts are the ones to have on hand.

The Considerable Benefits of a Smile

It seems that nothing has more power to elevate a mood than the impact of a genuine smile. Surprisingly enough, the benefits of a smile extend not only to the recipient of the warm gesture but also to the smiles originator. Yes, the old quotation may be true. "A smile is a little curve that sets a lot of things straight." Here are some of the many benefits of a smile:

Benefits of a smile: A healthier immune system

Various studies conducted over the years have shown that smiling and laughter can boost the functioning of the immune system. This may help to reduce your risk of developing everything from the common cold to chronic diseases such as cancer. Could there be a less expensive medicine than this?

Benefits of a smile: Helps to relieve stress

Smiling and laughter helps to promote release of a "feel good" group of hormones called endorphins. These are the same group of hormones responsible for the runners high you hear so much about. If you dont have time to get to the gym for a hard run, try adding a smile and a bit of laughter to boost these natural, stress relieving hormones.

Benefits of a smile: A smile is beautiful

Why do American spend thousands of dollars on makeup and cosmetic procedures to look more attractive and then walk around with a scowl on their faces? The most beautiful face in the world wont be pleasing with down turned lips and a sour expression. In contrast, a plain face can be transformed by the power of a smile. If you want to look better, try adding a genuine smile.

Benefits of a smile: A smile inspires others

When you smile at a stranger you not only boost your own health and beauty, you also send a positive message that can potentially change someone elses mood for the better. The stranger you graced with your smile may go on to pass the kindness to someone else. Who knows how far your original smile will travel?

Benefits of a smile: Smiling can increase your chances for success

When you smile, you appear confident and capable. Given the choice between two equally qualified job candidates, the smiling candidate is going to be perceived as being more of a team player and easier to work with. Who do you think is more likely to get the job offer?

The next time youre tempted to face the world with a frown, remember another old quotation. "It takes seventeen muscles to smile and forty-three to frown".

How to Determine Your Dogs Breed If Its a Mutt

If youre the proud owner of a mixed breed dog or "mutt", you probably repeatedly hear the question, "What kind of dog is that?" Although you probably have a few ideas, you may be a bit perplexed yourself when it comes to identifying your dogs heritage. Unfortunately, theres no ancestry.com website you can use to research your dogs lineage. Luckily, finding out your dogs breed may be easier than you think thanks to several new companies that do genetic testing on mixed breed dogs looking for an identity.

One company that offers to determine a dogs breed is MetaMorphix, located in Beltsville, Maryland. If your dog is a mixture of one of forty breeds, it can be detected by using their Canine Heritage Breed Test. To test a dogs breed using this service, its as simple as taking a swab of your dogs saliva using a check swab collection brush. The sample is packaged and sent to the company for genetic testing. In four to six weeks, youll receive a certificate proudly indicating your dogs breed analysis. They also ask that you send in a digital photo which will be placed on your dogs breed certificate once its completed. How much does this testing cost? At the present time, the price is listed as $119, a seemingly reasonable price for such a unique service.

Other companies are now starting to offer a similar dog breed identification service. With dogs being such an important member of the family, it seems likely this type of service will remain in demand. Its an easy and relatively inexpensive way to settle the ongoing demand of what kind of dog Fido really is. Plus, when people ask at the dog park, youll have a definitive answer. You can also frame and proudly display your dogs breed certificate complete with digital photo in a prominent place in your home.

If you dont want to spend the money to have your dogs breed determined by genetic testing, a little reading and research on your own can give you clues as to what kind of mix your mutt really is. Its not only important to look at face and body features but also the personality characteristics of your dog and compare those traits to typical breeds. Another option is to get the opinion of your veterinarian who has the advantage of seeing hundreds of mixed breed dogs on a monthly basis.

It can be interesting to use genetic testing to determine your dogs breed, but no matter what the results, hell still be the special, one-of-kind dog youve grown to love.

Milk and Acne: Does Fermented Milk Help?

Acne can cause a great deal of frustration and heartache for both teens and adults. Its due to overproduction of sebum and poor skin sloughing, which blocks the pores. This overproduction of sebum is thought to be triggered by fluctuating levels of hormones, especially testosterone. When excess sebum and poor sloughing clogs a pore, bacteria feed on it and it becomes inflamed - leading to ugly, acne lesions. Not surprisingly, researchers have looked at the connection between acne and diet - dairy products, in particular. Interestingly, the effects of milk on acne could depend on what type of milk you drink.

Milk and Acne

Researchers speculated that milk may worsen acne by increasing levels of a hormone called IGF-1 that triggers acne outbreaks when it interacts with testosterone, also present in cows milk. Some, but not all, studies show that milk drinkers have a greater risk of developing severe acne lesions.

Fermented Milk to the Rescue

Not all milk is created equal when it comes to acne. More recent research shows that fermented milk may be beneficial for preventing acne outbreaks - especially fermented milk supplemented with 200 milligrams of lactoferrin.

In a study published in the journal Nutrition, researchers gave 36 young people fermented milk or fermented milk enriched with lactoferrin for 12 weeks. The group who drank the lactoferrin-enriched milk developed fewer acne lesions, less sebum and fewer painful inflammatory lesions than those who drank fermented milk without lactoferrin. They also had fewer skin surface lipids that could contribute to clogged pores.

Researchers believe lactoferrin-enriched fermented milk improves immune function and helps to keep the bacteria and inflammatory response in check so that a person gets fewer acne outbreaks and less inflammatory lesions. Lactoferrin also has anti-bacterial activity.

Milk and Acne: The Bottom Line?

Whether drinking regular milk worsens the symptoms of acne is unclear, but drinking lactoferrin-enriched fermented milk may have some benefits. Fermented milk is available at many natural food stores, and some people have an easier time digesting it than regular milk. If you have acne and you drink regular milk, switch over to fermented milk enriched with lactoferrin for a few weeks and keep a diary of your acne outbreaks to see if it helps.

How Unhealthy is the Wendys Baconator Sandwich?

Fast-food restaurants have earned the reputation of offering high-calorie fare thats also weak in the nutrition department. Wendys restaurant is no exception. One of their more recent launches is the Baconator. This sandwich is made of the stuff meat-lovers crave - hamburger and bacon. The Baconator sandwich might "hit the spot" for carnivores, but how bad is it from a health standpoint? Get the low-down on the Wendys Baconator sandwich.

Baconator Nutrition Facts: Its Not Health Food

Wendys offers three different versions of the Baconator - the single, double, and triple. The single has one four-ounce patty of beef, while the double and triple have two or three patties. Then Wendys adds strips of bacon, slices of American cheese, mayonnaise, and ketchup - and throws it on a bun to finish off the fast-food creation the world knows as the Baconator sandwich.

The Low Down on Baccinator Nutrition or the Lack Thereof

The Baconator sandwich has 610 calories and 34 grams of fat when you order it as a single - and not all of it is healthy fat. In fact, the Baconator has 14 grams of artery-clogging saturated fat and small amounts of trans-fat too. Add to that almost 1200 milligrams of salt, and you can see why your cardiologist makes money off of people who eat at Wendys. This isnt a heart-friendly sandwich. On the plus side, it has 32 grams of protein, which makes it filling.

Other Bad Baconator Nutrition Facts

The disturbing fact is this. The Baconator gives you lots of calories and fat, but very little fiber, vitamins, or antioxidants. You get some calcium from the cheese and iron and vitamin B12 from the meat as well as modest amounts of vitamins A and C - but its still weak on the nutritional front. Not to mention bad for the arteries.

The Bacinator Sandwich at Wendys Restaurant: Should You Eat It?

Save this fatty burger for a splurge - and order a single with lettuce, tomato, and mustard instead. If you absolutely must have the bacon, order a single slice of Applewood smoked bacon to go with your sandwich. Wendys offers this as an add-on. This revamping will save you over 200 calories and youll still get the great taste of bacon. Add a side-salad for more fiber. The bottom line? The Baconator sandwich tastes good if youre a meat lover, but there are healthier fast-food options. Order them instead.

Parsley for Breath Odor - Does it Work?

No one wants to offend someone with their breath. A person with bad breath will often feverishly search for the right product to make their breath smell sweeter. Unfortunately, many commercial mouthwashes mask the odor without addressing the underlying problem. There are a variety of medical conditions that can cause bad breath, but the usual cause is an overabundance of sulfur producing bacteria in the mouth and on the tongue. One solution thats often recommended for bad breath is chewing on fresh parsley. This age old solution has been passed down over the years; but does it really work? Is parsley for breath odor effective?

Because bad breath usually stems from sulfur producing bacteria in the mouth, the most effective way to eliminate the odor is to wipe out the offending bacteria. Theres evidence that the polyphenols found in green tea and the "good" bacteria found in yogurt can inhibit the growth of many of these odor producing bacteria. As far as parsley for breath odor, the news is not so good. Like mouthwashes and rinses that dont really solve the problem, chewing on parsley masks bad breath odor temporarily rather than truly solving the problem.

Still, parsley for breath odor is an old folk remedy that many people swear by. Parsley is believed to be effective because its a good source of chlorophyll, a compound thought to have anti-bacterial properties. Although some studies show that chlorophyll kills bacteria, study results have been inconsistent. In the case of bad breath odor, parsley doesnt seem to have enough anti-bacterial impact to wipe out the sulfur compounds that cause the breath to smell. Chewing on a sprig of parsley may temporarily reduce the odor of bad breath, but it may be no more effective than chewing on other herbs. Chewing on almost any fresh herb will have some short-term impact on breath odor by stimulating saliva flow. In fact, cinnamon may be a better herb to chew since it appears to have anti-bacterial activity and a refreshing smell as well.

The bottom line when it comes to parsley for breath odor? Chewing on parsley is likely only a temporary fix for bad breath odor. Chewing on a stick of cinnamon, sugar-free gum sweetened with xylitol is a better option since both xylitol and cinnamon have anti-bacterial properties. The act of chewing gum also stimulates saliva flow which helps to wash out odor causing bacteria. Keep a pack in your pocket and save the parsley as a garnish instead.

Do Bananas Cause Constipation?

Doctors often recommend that people eat bananas when they have diarrhea - as part of the BRAT diet. (bananas, rice, applesauce, and tea). Because bananas help to relieve diarrhea, many people assume that bananas slow down bowel movements. Do bananas cause constipation?

Bananas and Constipation: Do Bananas Cause Constipation?

Bananas help to treat diarrhea because they contain pectin, a complex-carbohydrate that increases water absorption from the intestines. By causing more water to be reabsorbed from the bowels, the pectin in bananas decreases the number of loose, watery stools people with diarrhea experience. Bananas are also rich in potassium, a mineral which is depleted in people who have chronic diarrhea.

What about bananas and constipation? Bananas are a very good source of fiber, and fiber-rich foods, especially insoluble fiber, reduce constipation. Why the discrepancy? The effect bananas have on the colon depends partially on the type of banana you eat. Bananas that are ripe are best for keeping stool moving through the intestines, whereas unripe bananas are more likely to cause constipation due to their higher starch content.

Bananas and Constipation: Should You Eat Them if Youre Prone to Constipation?

Because of the "dual" effects of bananas on the intestines, its best to eat them in moderation if youre prone to constipation. They probably wont cause a slow-down in bowel movements unless you eat green bananas in large amounts.

On the other hand, there are better fruits for relieving constipation such as prunes, figs, apricots, pears, and peaches. Try eating some of these fruits in place of some of the bananas you normally eat - if you want to keep your bowels moving. Be sure to drink lots of liquids if youre prone to constipation. Dehydration will only make the symptoms worse.

Do Bananas Cause Constipation: The Bottom Line?

If youre prone to constipation, theres no need to completely give up bananas. Its okay to eat ripe bananas in moderation along with other high-fiber fruits - and follow up by drinking more liquids.

Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium, and its the plant food highest in vitamin B6. This tasty tropical fruit is a good source of energy - and it makes a great tasting smoothie thicker and even more delicious. Enjoy bananas, but do so in moderation.

Why Brewing Coffee with a French Press Tastes Better

Are you obsessed with brewing a good cup of coffee? If you want a superior cup of coffee without all the labor, brewing coffee with a French press coffee maker may be the answer. A French press is a convenient way to get a superlative cup of coffee, full of rich, strong bodied flavor. Plus, its easy to use whether youre at home or on the go. Yes, you can even use a small, portable French press to brew fresh coffee at work, but dont be surprised when no one drinks the office coffee anymore. Theyll be holding their cups out to you.

Why does a French press deliver a superior cup of coffee? When you prepare coffee with a French press, no filter is required. You simply add the coffee to the press followed by hot water. The coffee is allowed to brew for around four minutes. Then, the plunger is pushed down to separate the coffee grounds from the freshly brewed coffee. Because a paper filter isnt used, theres no opportunity for the aromatic essential oils to be soaked up by the paper which means more flavor ends up in your cup. Another reason why brewing coffee with a French press delivers more flavor is the fact that hot water completely surrounds the coffee beans, allowing the full flavor to be extracted from the beans.

Brewing coffee with a French press is especially handy when you only want a serving or two, not a whole pot. French presses come in all sizes. There are ones that brew only four ounces at a time as well as larger ones that brew up to sixteen ounces. The small, four ounce sizes are perfect if you happen to get a coffee craving on the run and dont want to pull into a Starbucks drive-thru. Besides, your coffee tastes better.

One word of warning. A medical study showed that brewing coffee with a French press may cause elevation of an amino acid known as homocysteine in the bloodsteam of coffee drinkers. High levels of this amino acid have been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Coffee brewed with a French press also contains high levels of diterpenes which can raise cholesterol levels. For this reason, its best to limit the number of cups of French pressed coffee you drink. Even better, alternate cups of coffee with green tea. A French press coffee maker can also be used to make hot tea using loose leaf tea leaves. Its truly a multi-purpose machine.

The Health Benefits of Lime Juice

Ahh! Nothing tastes more refreshing on a hot summer day than a cold glass of limeade. Most limeade contains too much sugar to be called a healthy drink, but the lime juice you use to make it has some surprising health properties. What are the health benefits of lime juice?

Health Benefits of Lime Juice: Its Good for the Skin and Joints

A single cup of lime juice has almost seventy-three milligrams of vitamin C - more than a full days requirement for this important antioxidant vitamin thats involved in so many bodily functions. Vitamin C helps to build healthy skin, ligaments, and tendons by stimulating synthesis of collagen - the backbone of healthy skin and joints. It also gives the immune system a boost to help fight off colds and flu viruses. Did you know that you absorb more iron when you eat iron-rich foods with vitamin C rich drinks such as lime juice? Its also a tasty and refreshing break from orange juice.

Health Benefits of Lime Juice: Its Good for the Blood Pressure

Lime juice is a good source of potassium - an element needed by every cell in the body. Potassium is important for regulating the heart rhythm and helps to relax blood vessels and reduce the risk of hypertension. A diet low in potassium and high in sodium is a key factor in the development of hypertension for some people.

Health Benefits of Lime Juice: Cancer Prevention?

Limes are a good source of compounds called limonins which may help to protect against cancer of the lungs and digestive tract. The limonins found in citrus juices such as lime juice also activates liver enzymes that help to break down and detoxify cancer causing chemicals. In addition, theyre a good source of flavonoids to help counteract the free radical damage that can lead to cancer.

Health Benefits of Lime Juice: How to Use It

Use a citrus juicer to make fresh lime juice and keep it in the refrigerator to add flavor to recipes instead of lemon juice. It gives a tangy flavor edge that reduces the amount of salt thats needed in most recipes - a real bonus if you have high blood pressure. Sprinkle a little on a fresh garden or fruit salad for added zing. Use it to make tangy dressings and marinades. Of course, you can enjoy it the old fashioned way with a big glass of limeade - just go light on the sugar.

How to Wear Leopard Print This Season

If you feel like youre seeing spots this season, you may be right. One of the hottest looks for 2009 comes straight from the woodlands of Africa in the form of stylish leopard print fashions. Leopard prints can add a touch of the wild to your winter and spring wardrobe this season. Theres no quicker way to enhance the look of basic black than by adding a leopard print accessory such as a long leopard patterned scarf. Heres how to use leopard print to work magic on your wardrobe this year.

Although some people feel a little intimidated by leopard prints because they make such a bold statement, theres no reason to shy away from this look. While a leopard print dress may not be for everyone, there are a variety of ways to add the chic look of leopard without overpowering your figure or your wallet.

If a leopard dress or skirt is too strong of a statement for your taste, why not dress up a black knit top and pants with a dramatic leopard scarf and team it with a roomy leather tote bag or purse? Dont forget about leopard print shoes and belts. These are subtle ways to make a big fashion statement with the dramatic look of leopard.

If youre feeling bolder, invest in a pretty leopard skin silk blouse to wear with black pants and heels for an evening out on the town. This combination always looks chic and ultra-sophisticated. Most leopard patterned blouses can also be worn with dark brown and deep rust pants and skirts, so dont feel like youre restricted to black. Its a great pattern to dress up a wardrobe of neutrals that could use a quick update.

When choosing a leopard print keep in mind that the scale of the print you choose can have a big impact on the look. If you want to stand out, choose a larger, bolder print. You can also find leopard skin prints that are smaller and more discrete if you want a conservative look. Try using the size of the print to subtly enhance your figure. If you want to draw the eye up and away from your hips, wear a large, bold leopard pattern.

If you want a dramatic look, visit a vintage clothing store and find a leopard print coat. These were popular in the 1950s and 1960s and can be found in faux fur in a variety of styles including swing coats and trapeze styles. These pieces are very bold and look best against a simple background of black or dark brown. Theyre fun to wear on casual weekend excursions.

Have fun exploring the world of leopard prints this year!

Can a Vitamin Be Used to Treat Glaucoma?

Can vitamin E treat glaucoma? It sounds farfetched, but this fat soluble, antioxidant vitamin could make it easier for glaucoma sufferers to treat their eye disease. According to new research presented at the American Chemical Society meeting, vitamin E could soon be used to make glaucoma treatment more effective.

What is Glaucoma and How is It Treated?

Glaucoma is a common eye disease thats caused by the build-up of pressure behind the eye. If its left untreated, a person can completely lose their vision. Normally, medicated eyedrops are placed in the affected eye which helps to lower the pressure and prevent loss of vision. The problem is the eyes produce tears which dilutes out the drops and carry them away before they have their full effect.

Vitamin E to Treat Glaucoma: What Role Does Vitamin E Play?

Researchers have developed special contact lenses that are coated with vitamin E and an eye pressure lowering medication that would normally be used to treat glaucoma. Adding vitamin E in the contact lens creates a barrier so that the glaucoma medication isnt diluted out and removed by the tears that the eye produces. Vitamin E essentially serves as a barrier to keep the glaucoma medication in contact with the eye longer.

Can Using Vitamin E Help Other Eye Conditions?

Researchers hope to use vitamin E to treat other eye conditions such as dry eyes and cataracts too. Using vitamin E is a safe and natural way to treat glaucoma and, possibly, other eye problems since its an antioxidant vitamin that helps to keep the eyes healthy. Using vitamin E in this manner also helps to protect the eyes against the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. Another benefit? Some studies show that a diet rich in vitamin E lowers the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration of the eyes.

Vitamin E to Prevent Glaucoma

Vitamin E enhanced contact lenses to treat glaucoma arent available just yet. Animal studies need to be carried out to determine the safety of this treatment - and human studies should follow. The good news is these contact lenses are as easy to wear as regular contact lenses and could make it easier for people with glaucoma to treat their disease - safely and effectively.

Green Tea for Health: Are You Really Getting the Benefits?

Of course you enjoy sipping that warm, fragrant cup of green tea in the morning, but you also appreciate the health benefits. Although some people choose green tea for the taste, others make the switch for health reasons. Preliminary studies suggest that green tea can have a variety of benefits ranging from promoting heart health to the prevention of certain types of cancer. If youre drinking green tea for health, a new study suggests that you may want to consider how youre storing it.

What makes green tea so special? The component of green tea that seems to be responsible for many of the health benefits are antioxidant compounds known as catechins. Catechins have been found to have a variety of beneficial health properties and are believed to be the key reason why green tea is healthier than black tea which has fewer catechins due to its additional processing. Researchers have recently discovered that the catechins found in green tea may break down over time resulting in a compound thats much less beneficial from a health standpoint. The results of this discovery are published in the most recent issue of the Journal of Food Science. If youre using green tea for health, this research could have a significant impact on the way you buy and store your tea.

The researchers suggest that storage times as short as six months may reduce the levels of catechins in green tea resulting in a product that has fewer health benefits. Even if you store your green tea for less than six months, the tea leaves may have been stored in a warehouse for a long period of time before it reaches the store to be sold. You would have to factor in the time the tea sits on store shelves. Unfortunately, if youre drinking green tea for health, theres no way to really know if you have a fresh, healthy product. Tea is likely to be stored for long periods of time before reaching you since its not perishable, although the taste quality can decline over time.

Most experts recommend that green tea be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dark place .It isnt clear whether this type of storage helps to prevent the breakdown of catechins, although it may help preserve the quality of the tea. If youre drinking green tea for health, buy the freshest leaves possible and purchase in small quantities so you dont have tea leaves in storage for long periods of time. Whatever you do, keep drinking green tea for health as well as for its delicious taste.

The Symptoms of Cat Scratch Fever

Its a disease that affects 22,000 cat lowers a year and many cat owners are unaware it exists. Cat scratch disease, also known as cat scratch fever, infects people who come into contact with cats through a bite or scratch. Less commonly a human can be infected by a tick carrying the disease that has bitten a cat. What are the symptoms of cat scratch fever?

How Do You Catch Cat Scratch Disease?

Cat scratch fever is caused by Bartonella henselae, a tiny organism carried by cat fleas. Its also carried in the red blood cells of some cats. The disease is most common in children and is transmitted to them through cat scratches or a cat bite. Although children are its most frequent victims, adults who get a cat bite or scratch can get it too.

Symptoms of Cat Scratch Fever

The first sign of cat scratch disease is a bump or sore on the skin five to ten days after a cat scratch or bite. The sore may be so insignificant in appearance that it goes unnoticed. Swelling in the lymph nodes involving the neck, under the arms groin or chest usually follows about a week or two later. The swollen lymph nodes commonly affect one side of the body only, and they may be quite large and tender. The majority of people go on to develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, achy joints and fatigue.

In the majority of cases, the symptoms of cat scratch fever go away after a few weeks to months even without treatment and usually arent a serious threat to health. On the other hand, people who have poorly functioning immune systems can have complications such as brain, eye or liver involvement. Cat scratch fever can, rarely, spread to bones or infect a heart valve.

The symptoms of cat scratch fever dont necessarily require treatment if theyre mild, but anyone with immune system problems should get antibiotic therapy to reduce the risk of serious complications.

Symptoms of Cat Scratch Fever: The Bottom Line?

Anyone who has swollen lymph nodes or flu-like symptoms after a cat bite or scratch needs evaluation. Cat Scratch disease is diagnosed through a blood test looking for antibodies to Bartonella henselae, the microorganism that causes cat scratch fever. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, a decision as to whether to use antibiotics can be made - and the healing can begin.

How to Clean a Yoga Mat and Avoid Foot Infections

If youre a student of yoga, you know how important your yoga mat is to your stretching success. It might surprise you to learn that yoga mats at health clubs can be a source for athletes foot due to ineffective cleaning of these mats. If you have your own yoga mat, youll need a plan to keep it clean and free of germs and odor. Heres how to clean a yoga mat and keep it looking fresh:

Clean a yoga mat: Dont share your mat

This is the first simple rule of avoiding a fungal or bacterial infection from a yoga mat. Buy your own mat and make it exclusively yours. Dont share it with anyone. Consider your yoga mat to be as personal as your toothbrush and youll reduce your risk of contracting a nasty foot infection.

Clean a yoga mat: Use your washing machine

Most people dont realize they can clean their mat in the washing machine. Use cold water along with a mild detergent and stop the dryer before it goes through the spin cycle. Once removed from the dryer, lay the mat out to dry completely before storing it. Avoid exposing your mat to heat as this can cause the fibers of the mat to break down.

Clean a yoga mat: Cleaning a slightly soiled mat

If your mat only has light soiling and doesnt require a cycle through the washing machine, you can mix a cup of warm water with several drops of mild detergent to create a dilute, soapy mixture. Use a sponge to gently massage the soiled areas with your homemade solution. Follow up by sponging down with a sponge dampened in warm water. Allow your mat to dry thoroughly.

Clean a yoga mat: Clean it lightly after every use

To keep your mat looking and smelling fresh, spray it lightly with a mat cleaning spray. To make your own all-natural mat cleaning spray, add three drops of tea tree oil, two drops of peppermint oil, and two drops of lavender oil to distilled water. Mix thoroughly and place the solution in a spray bottle. Spray your mat lightly after every use and wipe it down gently with a damp sponge.

Clean a yoga mat: Have a regular cleaning schedule

To keep your mat looking and smelling great, have a regular cleaning schedule. In addition to spraying it after every use, place it in the washer every three to four weeks for a more thorough cleansing.

By having a regular planning for cleaning your yoga mat, you can keep it smelling sweet while reducing your risk of potential foot infections.

How to Make Decorative Bath Soaps Using Custom Soap Decals

Beautifully decorated soaps can really add to the d?cor of a bathroom, giving it a unique personal touch. If you dont want to go to the trouble of making your own soap, you can still make custom decorative bath soaps using pretty soap decals. A soap decal can be created from almost any copyright free image you find in a magazine or other paper product such as gift wrap. These decals are easy to apply to a ready made bar of soap to give it a unique, personalized, and decorative look. Heres how to make decorative bath soap using soap decals:

Make decorative bath soaps: Find your images

First youll need to decide what type of images you want to use to decorate your soaps. Does your bathroom have a Victorian look? If so you might want to use old fashioned floral images or other Victorian motifs to apply to your soap bars. A good place to get interesting patterns and images to use is from wrapping paper. Why not visit a paper store that carries unique wrapping paper and see if you can find some unique wrapping paper that can be used to cut out designs for your soap decals?

Make decorative soaps: Apply the images

Using a small pair of scissors carefully cut out the soap decals youll be applying to your soaps. Lightly moisten the back of the image as well as the surface of the soap where youll be applying the image. Place the image onto the damp portion of the soap and lightly rub to smooth away any wrinkles.

Make decorative soaps: Cover your image with wax

Using a double boiler, melt your paraffin wax until the wax appears clear in the pan with no visible cloudiness. Once the wax is ready, dip the soap with the soap decal face down into the melted wax. The surface will now have a thin coating of wax. Lay the soap face up on wax paper until it dries completely. It may appear slightly cloudy at first but will dry clear. Complete this process with all the soaps you plan on decorating.

Make decorative soaps: Display your soaps

Once your soaps have dried completely, its time to display them in your bathroom. Place them in pretty soap dishes or in baskets decorated with ribbons. Dont forget these soaps make wonderful gifts and the images can be customized to meet the needs of your recipient.

Making decorative bath soaps using soap decals is also a great way to keep a child occupied on a rainy day. Why not create some special bath soaps of your own?

Is it Dangerous to Eat Apple Seeds?

Did your mom ever tell you not to eat apple seeds or an apple could grow in your stomach? Well, your mom may have been right. You shouldnt eat apple seeds, but its not because of the apple tree. Apple seeds contain substances called cyanogenic glycosides (a cyanide containing compound) which could cause health problems if consumed in very high quantities. Apple seeds arent the only fruit seeds that contain cyanide, so do the seeds of peaches, apricots, cherries, and raspberries, to name a few. Its quite likely youve swallowed a few apple seeds in your life, if theyre poisonous, why didnt you experience any serious symptoms?

Cyanogenic glycosides, as the name suggests, contains cyanide attached to a sugar molecule. When this compound is acted on by an enzyme, the sugar molecule is cleaved off, leaving behind the well known poison, cyanide. The truth is if you were to eat apple seeds in large quantities, they could kill you, but in most cases, the seeds pass through the digestive system without releasing significant amounts of cyanide unless you chew on them to release the toxin. Even if some poison is released from the seeds, your body has the capability of neutralizing small amounts of cyanide and you probably wouldnt experience serious effects unless you were to eat apple seeds in very high amounts. Unfortunately, a small child or a pet may not be so lucky. It might not take a large number of apple seeds to cause symptoms in a child or pet which means you should avoid giving your pets apples unless you remove the seeds. The same applies to children.

What kind of symptoms would develop if you were to eat apple seeds to the point of toxicity? You might experience neurological symptoms including seizures, headache, lightheadedness, and dizziness along with fluctuations in heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure. Vomiting and excessive salivation could occur. If you consumed enough seeds, you might develop severe breathing problems followed by respiratory failure and death. Because of the large quantity of seeds needed to poison a human, this isnt commonly seen, although animals are not infrequently affected.

The bottom line? You probably shouldnt panic if you swallow a few apple seeds. Its more important to make sure children and pets dont eat apple seeds. (or other fruit seeds and pits). Whatever you do - keep giving the kids those seedless apples! Theyre a healthy source of fiber and antioxidants.

A Natural Treatment for Uterine Fibroids on the Horizon?

Almost one in three women will deal with a uterine fibroid at some point in her lifetime. These benign tumors of the uterus can become so large that they require surgery to relieve the heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, and backache they cause - an event few women look forward to. Fortunately, new research in mice shows there may be a natural treatment for uterine fibroids on the horizon - and it may be as close as your tea cup.

Green Tea to Treat Uterine Fibroids?

A study conducted on mice showed that a green tea extract containing EGCG slowed down the growth of fibroid tumors in mice. Twenty mice were injected with uterine fibroid cells that were destined to grow into fibroid tumors. Half of the mice were given EGCG, a polyphenol found in green tea, in their water, while the other half drank only plain water.

The results? The mice that drank the EGCG water had tumors that were smaller and weighed less. One mice had no tumor at the end of a two month period. Because EGCG slowed down the growth of uterine fibroids in mice, researchers are hoping that giving EGCG or a green tea extract might also slow down their growth in women so they dont become large enough to require surgery. If these studies are confirmed in humans, EGCG from green tea could be a natural treatment for fibroids - one that could slow down or stop their progression.

Benign Tumors of the Uterus: Can Green Tea Prevent Them?

Can drinking green tea or taking a green tea extract be used to prevent fibroid tumors of the uterus? Once further studies confirm that EGCG slows down the growth of uterine fibroids in humans, researchers may want to know if drinking green tea can stop these tumors from occurring in the first place. Studies have shown that green tea lowers estrogen levels. Estrogen is the fuel that stimulates the growth of these benign tumors of the uterus, so its not surprising that drinking green tea could offer some protection.

It may be too soon to use green tea to treat uterine fibroids, but, if these studies are confirmed it may spur the development of a safe and natural treatment for uterine fibroids that doesnt require going under the knife.

How to Determine If Your Hair is Damaged From Perms

If you have naturally straight hair and have wanted masses of wavy hair, you may have taken the plunge and gotten a perm. Unfortunately, one of the biggest disadvantages of adding perm chemicals to your hair is damage and with a poorly done perm the damage can be considerable. Even though your hair may look deceptively healthy, you can still have dryness, breakage, and porosity as a result of over perming. How can you tell if you have significant perm damage to your hair? In most cases, if youve used chemicals on your hair for any length of time, some damage is to be expected, which may be partially improved by deep conditioning treatments and cutting back on the use of chemical treatments. Here are some ways to test the health of your hair strands to determine if you have perm damage:

Visually inspect your hair.

Take an honest look at your hair in the mirror under a good light. Does it look dull and dry in appearance? Do you notice a lot of fly away strands? These are all signs of perm damage and over processing. Look at the ends of your hair closely. Do you see split ends? While a few split ends here and there are not a cause for concern, if theyre numerous, you probably have a significant degree of perm damage. How does your hair feel? If it feels dry, like straw, your hair is seriously moisture deprived.

Do the pull test

Cut off a single strand of hair. Hold it firmly between the fingers of two hands and pull. If the hair strand snaps quickly with tugging, your hair is deprived of moisture and needs a deep moisturizing or hot oil treatment to moisturize the hair shaft. Healthy hair is usually difficult to break in this manner. If the hair strand stretches excessively when you pull on it can mean damage to the protein structure of the hair due to the over processing from perm chemicals.

See if it floats

Cut off a strand of hair and place it into a sink filled with water. Healthy hair without perm damage will tend to float on the surface as its nonporous and doesnt absorb the water. If the hair sinks to the bottom, the hair is porous and over processed from perming and needs an acid based conditioner to reduce porosity and close the hair shaft.

If you find that your hair fails these simple tests to determine perm damage, you may want to consult your hair dresser. Together you can devise a plan for repairing your dry, porous hair and preventing future damage.

Should You Stretch Before Running?

Should you stretch before running? Some runners do - and some dont. It would seem that stretching would be a way to reduce the risk of injury. After all, running with warm muscles sounds like a good preventative strategy - but is it?

Stretching Before Running - Yes or No?

According to a new study presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, stretching before running doesnt prevent running injuries.

They discovered this after studying 2,729 runners, who ran at least 10 miles per week. The runners were divided into two groups. One group did 3 to 5 minutes of stretching exercises where they stretched all of the muscles in their legs before hitting the track. Another group did no stretching.

Surprisingly, it didnt seem to matter whether the runners stretched before running or not. The risk of for a running injury was the same. In fact, the biggest risk factors for a running injury was being overweight and having a history of an injury within the prior four months.

Runners who changed their approach to stretching such as starting to stretch when they normally didnt or stopping stretching after previously stretching before a run also increased their risk of injury. As you might expect, runners who logged lots of miles were at greater risk for a running-related injury.

Should You Stretch Before Running?

It may not reduce your risk of a running injury, but some runners feel better when they warm up their muscles before a run. If you choose to stretch, dont stretch cold muscles. Walk a few minutes to warm up before stretching them out. Do each stretch slowly, holding the position for 15 seconds - no sudden movements or bouncing.

The Bottom Line?

Whether or not you stretch before running may not affect your risk of getting a running injury, but being overweight and logging too many miles without giving your muscles a chance to rest does. If youve had a recent running injury, be conservative about how many miles you run, because your risk of injury is higher.

Stretch before running or not? Do what makes you feel comfortable, but be consistent. Dont stretch one time and not stretch the next time. Inconsistent stretching before a run can lead to injury.

Teenage Drinking and Impulsive Behavior

Most parents worry about teenage drinking because of the risk of car accidents, alcohol toxicity and run-ins with the law. But, according to a new study, theres a new reason to fear teenage drinking. Heavy drinking during the adolescent and teen years could lead to impulsive behavior later in life.

Teenage Drinking and Impulsive Behavior

In a study scheduled to be published in the journal Alcoholism, researchers followed 500 kids from the age of 6 to the age of 20. With the help of interviews and questionnaires, they gathered information about their drinking habits and whether or not they exhibited impulsive behavior.

What did they find? Adolescent boys were more likely to engage in impulsive behavior if they had drunk heavily the prior year. There was a direct correlation between the amount of alcohol the teens drank and their degree of impulsivity.

Teen Heavy Drinking: Does It Lead to Impulsive Behavior?

This study only shows a correlation between impulsive behavior and heavy drinking. It doesnt necessarily mean that one causes the other hand. Its possible that teens that are prone toward impulsivity are also more likely to abuse alcohol. But researchers have another theory. They believe that heavy drinking during the critical adolescent years alters an area of the brain known as the prefrontal cortex.

In addition to its other functions, the prefrontal cortex plays a role in controlling social behaviors. When this area of the brain is damaged, impulsive behaviors become more common. Such impulsive behaviors not only put a teen at risk for injury, they lead to even more heavy drinking with all of its negative health consequences - creating a vicious cycle of impulsivity and heavy drinking.

Can the Impulsive Behavior Be Reversed?

According to this study, teens that stopped drinking heavily also became less impulsive - so the effects may not be permanent. The key is to get them to stop.

Teenage Drinking and Impulsivity: The Bottom Line?

Theres now another good reason to keep alcohol out of a teens hands. It could temporarily change the area of the brain that suppresses bad impulses. Discuss the danger of teenage drinking with your kids so they wont be tempted to start. It could save their life - and their brain.

Can a Child Outgrow Allergy Symptoms?

Its challenging to deal with a child who has multiple allergies. Kids get into so many things, and they may not understand the importance of avoiding certain foods and exposures that could trigger their allergy symptoms. Food allergies in children are on the rise, and its not clear why. Some experts believe its due to increased awareness and better diagnosis, whereas others attribute it to the hygiene theory, which suggests that kids raised in a more sterile environment are more prone to allergies. Nevertheless, most parents hold out hope that their kids will outgrow their allergy symptoms as they get older. Is this likely?

Do Kids Outgrow Allergy Symptoms?

Its possible for a child to outgrow allergy symptoms, but a lot of it depends on what type of allergy they have and how severe it is. Kids are more likely to outgrow an allergy to food as opposed to an environmental allergen such as allergies to plants, dust or pets. In fact, environmental allergy symptoms may worsen as a child gets older.

In terms of food allergies, a child is most likely to outgrow allergies to dairy and eggs and less likely to outgrow nut allergies, although up to one in four will. The severity of the symptoms also plays a role in whether a child outgrows allergy symptoms. Kids who have severe symptoms such as wheezing and chest tightness with minimal exposure are less likely to have their symptoms improve with age. Also, if an allergist determines that a child has high levels of IgE antibodies against an allergen, its less likely theyll outgrow it.

Kids Who Outgrow Allergy Symptoms Can Still Have a Recurrence

Even when kids outgrow allergy symptoms, theres a small chance that the allergy will recur. The risk of this happening is higher if a child continues to avoid the allergen after outgrowing it. Once a child has outgrown an allergy to a particular food, most allergists recommend that the child eat the food frequently and continue to carry an epi-pen just in case.

Outgrowing Childhood Allergies: The Bottom Line?

Kids can outgrow food allergies, especially to milk and eggs. Even when they do, its important that they continue to carry an epi-pen to treat a reaction should the problem recur. Talk to your childs allergy doctor about this.
